Carolina ratifies the Constitution, becoming the twelfth state in the

The state
legislature grants a charter to the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad.
Construction of the railroad line begins, running north from Wilmington.

1838
|
Adam Winn, local
African-American landowner, sells 19 acres of land to the railroad. The
selling price is one dollar per acre. This area later becomes South Center
Street in Mount Olive.

1840
|
The Wilmington
& Raleigh Railroad is completed. The line runs from Wilmington, on the
Atlantic coast, to Weldon, on the Roanoke River. At the time it is the
longest railroad in the world at 161 miles. Direct passenger and freight
rail service is now available between Wilmington and Weldon.

|
Unincorporated
villages of Mount Olive and Goldsborough begin to grow near railroad
tracks.

1847
|
City of
Goldsborough (Goldsboro) is incorporated.

1853
|
U.S. Post Office
opens. Railroad stop and Post Office are officially named Mount Olive.

1855

Railroad is renamed
the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad.

May 20: North
Carolina secedes from the Union.

troops occupy the town of New Bern.

troops move through Mount Olive in a campaign to capture Goldsboro, with

Carolinas.

farm is established in Mount Olive. Truck farming becomes a major local
industry.

Telegraph, Mount Olive's first newspaper, is founded. The newspaper goes
out of business in 1890.

Line Railroad is formed by merger of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad

The Bank of Mount

The Georgia Pacific
Corporation (a wood products company) establishes production facilities at
Dudley, next to the railroad.

Carolina Turkey
builds its processing plant at Mount Olive.

CSX Transportation
is formed through a series of mergers and name changes. CSX owns and
operates the former Wilmington & Weldon Railroad through Mount Olive.

Pickle festival becomes an annual event.

IMPulse NC, Inc. is
established. The company is a manufacturer of specialized electrical
equipment for public transportation.

Andy's Cheesesteaks

The Mount Olive
Area Historical Society is organized.

The Mount Olive
Historic District is listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

Lippman Aaron Long,
Jr. and his wife, Christine sign a 99-year lease to the property at 137
East Main Street, Mount Olive, for a teaching and history museum.

Mount Olive Family
Medicine Center, a modern 16,000 square foot building, opens on Breazeale
Avenue.

2006
|
October: Carolina
Turkey purchases the Butterball brand, forming Butterball, LLC. The new
company becomes the largest turkey producer in the United States.

April 28: The
David John Aaron Teaching and History Museum opens during the 2007 North
